Oregon State University’s Center for the Outdoor Recreation Economy is working alongside state officials to develop Oregon’s 2025-2029 Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan.
The plan addresses three important priorities facing outdoor recreation providers in the coming years, including:
- The importance and benefits of recreation to Oregonians and the local economy.
- Balancing conservation with outdoor recreation.
- Engaging with underserved communities in outdoor recreation efforts.

The outdoor gear and apparel industry is a hallmark of the Oregon economy and is one of seven industries in the state that Business Oregon has declared key to economic development. This sector employs more than 25,000 Oregonians with a substantial average salary of $162,000.
Oregon State University-Cascades has collaborated with Oregon’s iconic brands to launch the innovative Outdoor Products program to meet the demands of this thriving industry.

Founded in part by Oregon State University and coordinated by West Virginia University, the Consortium is made up of member colleges and universities, focused on education for the Outdoor Recreation economy. We work closely with industry and government partners to support workforce development in this sector through:

- Creating national standards for workforce development
- Developing curriculum and programming to create clear outdoor recreation career pathways for students of all backgrounds
